I'm pretty sure most of you have already heard of this, but for those who didn't, apparently in Germany, five hundred fairytales that had been locked away in Regensburg for over 150 years have been discovered by the Franz Xaver von Schönwerth (who has just become my favorite person on earth).

OH. MY. GOD.

I think I speak the truth when I say that without our fairytales when we were children, our childhood would've been very different. They defined our youth years, they made us believe in magic, in things we can achieve if we just use our imagination.
With the discovery, they say that "A whole new world of magic animals, brave young princes and evil witches has come to light. The tales are part of a collection of myths, legends and fairytales". When it comes to reading myths and legends, many times I'm amazed of how quick I finish the stories. Merlin, greek gods and goddesses, I devour the pages.

We shouldn't assume the stories are for children and children alone. We learn from everything we read. Grown ups can gain knowledge from them just as much as they do with adult fiction. "Eichenseer says the fairytales are not for children alone. <<Their main purpose was to help young adults on their path to adulthood, showing them that dangers and challenges can be overcome through virtue, prudence and courage.>>"

When will we be able to read them? Unless you know German, you need to wait a while. "A Munich-based English translator, Dan Szabo, has already begun work on stories ranging from a miserly farmer and a money-mill to a turnip princess."

So... are you looking forward to this?

  5. This is so exciting... any news on how it will be translated and published? I am an avid lover of fairy tales - and you're right, they do shape our society. Just sad that it is always the same few that get plugged when there are so many excellent stories that never get made into movies or books.

    1. "No word when a complete English language edition will appear." I guess we'll just have to wait, they're 500 stories after all.. but trust me when I say that when they're out, you'll definitely know. I'll make a post about it for sure, cause I'll freak out when they're finally translated.
