"Once more into the fray
Into the last good fight I'll ever know.
Live or die on this day
Live or die on this day."
Based on the short story "Ghost walker" by Ian Mackenzie Jeffers, the movie portrays seven oil workers fighting for their survival after their plane crashes in Alaska. I want to start this by saying that I haven't seen such a good movie in a very, very long time. It is the kind of movie that stays with you long after it's over, it keeps you wondering of how things ended and it leaves you wanting for more. Now I've tried - without any success - to find the short story, but it's nowhere to be found. I would've given anything to find it and read it, because the entire movie I was thinking "God, this would make a great story". Imagine my excitement when at the end, I saw that there is actually a story and imagine my disappointment when I just couldn't find it.
You'll experience the cold. The fear. The danger that they're all going through. Just when you think it's all going good, the wolves strike yet again. Their eyes haunt them in the dark and not even fire scares them. How can you fight something that savage, how can you survive it?
Liam Neeson plays his role without flaw. He's not a cliché like Steven Seagal when he's trying to be the hero. Neeson shows you the good and the bad of his character, so you won't see him walking with sun glasses away from an explosion and come out with no injury whatsoever. He will get wounded and he will be the ultimate hero, the 'alpha-male', for taking care of the others and for fighting for his life, until his last breath.
The ending is pure perfection. There are no proper words to describe how beautifully, bittersweet it was portrayed. And if you thought your questions weren't answered at the end, after the credits are shown, there's yet another scene - quite small - that will only leave you with yet more things unanswered.
Bottom line: see the movie, try look for the short story, because it's a story that has to be known.
